Mend.io upgrades 184 open source organizations to the Renovate Community (OSS) plan
Mend.io has proactively upgraded 184 open source organizations and GitHub users to the Mend Renovate Community (OSS) plan, with no request required. The upgrade covers about 3,000 repositories with roughly 4 million combined GitHub stars. Maintainers get higher resource limits, more concurrency, and access to Merge Confidence.
At a glance
- 184 organizations and GitHub users upgraded proactively
- About 3,000 repositories actively using Renovate
- About 4 million combined GitHub stars
- Includes Merge Confidence, otherwise available only on the Enterprise plan
- Maintainers not on the list can still request the upgrade
What is the Renovate Community (OSS) plan?
The Community (OSS) plan is a tier of Mend Renovate Cloud, the Mend-hosted version of the Renovate dependency update tool, built for open source maintainers. It gives projects higher resource limits and increased concurrency, so they can keep dependencies up to date without hitting operational bottlenecks.
The plan also unlocks Merge Confidence, which is currently only available on the Enterprise plan. Merge Confidence analyzes real-world adoption and test data across the Mend Renovate early-adopter ecosystem to flag releases that may introduce undeclared breaking changes.
Together, these features reduce the burden on maintainers and make it easier to keep their software up to date and secure.
Why we upgraded maintainers proactively
For a couple of years now, we’ve supported open source maintainers with increased resources on Mend Renovate Cloud. Maintainers keep the ecosystem afloat while juggling many responsibilities. Keeping dependencies updated, while avoiding supply chain attacks, is one of the hardest.
In May, we partnered with GitHub in the Maintainer Month Partner Pack and saw more maintainers request the Community (OSS) plan. We also know maintainers are short on time, and adding another task to their list is a big ask, even one that improves their work.
So instead of waiting for projects to reach out, I decided we would upgrade them proactively.
How we chose which projects to upgrade
To find the highest-leverage projects, I looked across usage data for Mend-hosted Renovate and identified the largest organizations and users on the platform. I then cross-referenced that list with known package usage data and the licenses of all public repositories where the app is installed.
Which open source projects were upgraded?
We’ve proactively given the Community (OSS) plan to 184 organizations and GitHub users. This includes 34 organizations under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and 37 organizations under other Linux Foundation sub-foundations.
In no particular order, a handful of the projects include:

How can maintainers request the Community (OSS) plan?
If your project wasn’t included, you can still request the upgrade. Open a Mend Hosted Request on the Renovate GitHub Discussions board. We’re also reviewing more open source projects to upgrade proactively, so this list will grow.
